Zakynthos
Zakynthos is situated in the Ionian, about 8 nautical miles suth of Kefalonia and 15 miles west of Kylini (Peloponese).Surface area is 402 km2 and Zakynthos has a coastline of 123 km long. The shoreline counts numereous bays. The west coast where you will find high cliffs is only reached by boat and here are many deserted bays and beaches. From the mountains you have a fantastic view over the Ionian. The eastcoast is more flat with long sandy beaches.

Main source of income for the inhabitants is agriculture: vines, citrusfruits and ofcourse olives. Last but not least the touristindustry
Zakynthos - History
The Venetians ruled over Zakythos for more than 300 years and their influences are still noticeable. The Venetians called Zakynthos "Zante flore di levante" (flower of the east). In 1797 they where driven out by the French and after that period the English took over. It was not until 1864 that Zakynthos became part of Greece.Caretta-Caretta turtle
Zakyinthos is also well known for the Caretta-Caretta turtle. Especially on and around the island Marathonissi there are still many places where they mate and lay their eggs. In the area the water is very clear and the underwaterworld is rich with anemons and beautiful coloured fish. An eldorado for divers.
Caves around Zakynthos
At cape Skinari in the north of Zakynthos lay the famos Blue Caves. They are certainly worth a visit.

HOW TO GET THERE
Zakynthos has good flight connections either direct or via Athens. During the summer there are many charterflights from the U.K. It is also connected to the mainland by ferry (Kylini) or during season also to and from Kefalonia. Regular busses to Kylini from Athens.
